From the recording The One Up Song

I wrote this song at a songwriter's retreat. I received an assignment from the director and by the time I finished, the subject of the story brought Cousin Jimmy to mind, so I dedicated it to him and for everyone who has ever been one-upped!

Lyrics

My cousin Jimmy- he’s always one up- God knows he loves bringin’ me down
All my life so it seems- he’s been squashing my dreams, there’s no winning when Jimmy’s around
Cousin Jimmy and I had to face off- at the spelling bee finals one year
Fierce gladiators- we were only third graders- the desire to win quite sincere
Man, I sure studied hard - just to make it that far- bad memories hauntin’ me still
When all was said and done- cousin Jimmy had won- guess there’s no “s”- in the word- imbecile

So let’s drink one- for my cousin Jimmy- Jimmy’s a hell of a guy
I could never defeat him- God I just got to beat him- just once Lord- just once ‘fore I die

I was a freshman outfielder- at Lakeland High School -when asked up to varsity team
That same day don’t you know- cousin Jimmy did throw- the first perfect game the coach ever seen
That’s how my life was, growing up with my cuz,- he bested me best as he could
In his shadow I stayed, where I dreamed and I prayed- for the day that I’d get Jimmy good
I set focus on college- and applied to a few- and then one day it came in the mail
I got accepted how great- off to Michigan State- cousin Jim got a full ride to Yale

So let’s drink one for my cousin Jimmy- Jimmy’s a hell of a guy
I could never defeat him, God I just got to beat him- just once Lord, just once ‘fore I die

After college I decided- that I’d move back home- and I heard cousin Jim did the same
I’ve opened a practice- accounting and taxes- he’s a millionaire lawyer called James
(Esquire I believe)
Now I hear through the grapevine- that James is to wed- my middle school sweetheart named Mary
She’s easy on the eyes- and bakes great apple pies- oh, but nothing compared to her cherry!

So let’s drink one for my cousin Jimmy- Jimmy’s a hell of a guy
I could never defeat him, God I just got to beat him- just once Lord, just once ‘fore I die

Let’s hear it for my cousin Jimmy (Hooray)– Jimmy’s a hell of a guy (Hip hip horray)
I could never defeat him, God I just got to beat him- just once Lord, just once ‘fore I die
